“My kids are going to be shocked when they become adults and learn that I’ve basically been playing a character for their entire lives. All day long I have to pretend like I care about everything. I’m a laid back guy. I could actually care less if they make their beds. Or if they scratch the walls. But my character has expectations. He says what he means and he does what he says. My character hates video games. He barely allows them in the house. And he’ll banish them immediately when rules are broken. But I actually play Mario Kart all the time when they’re at school. Last week my character got really upset. He threatened to throw away candy if the kids didn’t stop wrestling. When the wrestling continued, he was forced to follow through. I really thought it was a safe move. It’d been so long since Halloween. I was sure there’d be nothing good left, maybe just some chalky wafer things. But the kid was saving the best stuff for last. It was brutal. Full sized candy bars. There were tears. I didn’t want to do it, but my character had to keep his word. Then later I fished them out of the trash and ate them all.”
I popped by NYC for 24 hours yesterday and, for some reason, decided I’d share some unrequested parenting advice with twenty or thirty million people. Making friends!
Good Backwards World Building: In the Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery mobile game, your player character must learn the charm Silencio, which causes the target to temporarily be unable to make any sound, during their fifth year at Hogwarts. During the class, it is revealed that one of the side effects of a failed Silencio charm is for the target of the spell to begin to swell uncontrollably. For players who are clever and remember the books, this will ring a bell- it was never explained why Aunt Marge in The Prisoner of Azkaban started swelling up when Harry got angry, only that he accidentally did magic. This reveal shows that in anger, his subconscious was likely trying to “shut her up”, causing a mis-cast Silencio charm, and therefore the side-effect of swelling. The reveal doesn’t change anything about the characters or their motivations, or add anything in particular to the plot. It’s just a neat bit of trivia.
Bad Backwards World Building: JKR tweets that [x] was part of [x minority group], even though there was no indication of such in the text, simply because it adds representation in hindsight.
Girls who call other girls “honey”, “lovely”, “sweetheart”, “beautiful”, and other terms of endearment automatically are my favourite girls. So sweet and loving and kind, a of them. Every time a girl or woman calls me a cute term of endearment? #blessed #healed #happy #glowing #complete #content
Cute receptionist at the doctor’s office the other day said “what’s up buttercup?” when I came in and I almost cried
My kink is when you’re eating a pint of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream and your spoon hits a massive boulder of cookie dough that you then pry out like an archaeologist on the dig of a lifetime
